Melvin Calingo AKA Tagailog

How did you discover comic books?
Way back when I was in elementary, I would go to my cousin’s to spend summer vacations there. They had subscriptions to Liwayway and Funny comics. I remember copying Super Dog and Planet Op di Eyps at the back of my notebooks and showing them to my classmates.
How did you get started in comic books?
My college buddies and I formed a comic book group called Point Zero in 1996. We drew comics and photocopied them, then distributed them among friends and even to some of our college professors. But I guess my first big break in comics came when I graduated. Culture Crash Comics was looking for a fourth artist to complete their anthology. I happened to be friends with Elmer Damaso, who was at the time, one of the artists. He was the one who introduced me to James Palabay, the editor of CCCom. James liked my portfolio, and so I got the job.
Who are your greatest influences?
Jim Lee, most definitely. A major influence of mine before I got into drawing manga. When I shifted styles, I liked Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma ½), Yukito Kishiro (battle Angel Alita), and Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell.) Later on, I discovered Hiroaki Samura’s Blade of the Immortal, and his style has been very influential to my art since then.
