Melvin Calingo AKA Tagailog

If you weren’t making comic books what would you be doing for a living?
I guess I’d still be doing something creative. I don’t like idling my mind away. I’m always thinking of something. I’d probably be an inventor…or a mad scientist, or something along those lines.
What is the best advice you can give to a comic book creator who is just starting out?
Never give up. I have heard a lot of stories from successful professional comic book artists, and the similarities in their experiences are uncanny. Sometime when they were still starting out, a pro would comment on their work and say “You’ll never land a professional job.” Of course, they ended up drawing big titles for Marvel and DC, leaving the said pro eating his own words.
On the flipside, it is also important to listen to what other people think of your work. You can learn a lot from people especially those who have already worked on the field. Listen to their criticisms and suggestions so that you may improve upon your work. Some people are just too kind to give an honest opinion to your work…do not let their praises drown out the flaws that your work may hide. Ask them how you may improve your work in the future.
Weed out the trolls. It is easy to see if a criticism is meant to be a constructive one or just made to irk you. Acting upon constructive criticisms can yield positive results to your work, while reacting to trolls is just a plain waste of energy.
